Oakham have shaken up the Daily Mail Schools Trophy by inflicting a first defeat in nearly two years on high-flying Bedford.

Bedford, who were last defeated in November 2014 by Warwick, outscored Oakham by two tries to one but the second-half goal kicking of Joe Lewis proved decisive in a 13-12 win.

Lewis kicked two penalty goals to go alongside a first-half conversion of a try by prop Alfie Dawson.

Bedford's outstanding unbeaten run earned them third place in the Trophy last season behind champions Wellington.

For Oakham, who had not beaten Bedford since 2007, the narrow away win continued their excellent start which has brought wins also over Denstone, Stamford and Uppingham.

Brighton College, Clifton College and Rugby are the other teams unbeaten on four games so far in this season's Trophy organised by schoolsrugby.co.uk Brighton, who hosted the England senior squad this week, maintained their impressive form by beating Dulwich 37-17.

The England link started last May when Eddie Jones brought the senior squad for a training camp in Brighton before the tour of Australia.

Brighton made a quick start against Dulwich to lead 10-0 and then sped away after the interval. Henry Simpson contributed three tries and two came from Alfie Beadle.

Wellington overcame Millfield 35-17 in an entertaining clash which featured a haul of 28 points for wing Dylan Moss.

The Wales under-18 schoolboy collected a hat-trick and landed two late penalties among his kicking haul to stop a Millfield fightback after Wellington had led 19-7 at one stage.

Whitgift, who had beaten Wellington last week, 15-14, lost out in another close tussle this time to Warwick, 8-3.

The teams were locked at 0-0 after 40 minutes and it needed a try from Warwick hooker Kyriakos Grammatopolous to settle the contest after an earlier penalty from Will Tanner.

Warwick are now unbeaten in three following two other close calls in September over Bromsgrove, 15-7, and Stowe, 20-17.
